David grew up in southwestern Ohio, the only child of public high school educators. He has been practicing in the areas of Elder Law, Medicaid, Guardianship, Probate and Estate Planning since 1999. He brings to this area of law a keen interest in issues surrounding the aging population and a desire to make complex issues easily understandable. He jokes all the time (but it’s not really a joke) that the firm’s letterhead ought to read “Attorney, Counselor, Listener, Explainer, and Myth-buster At Law.” He strives to make sure that clients understand exactly what they’re signing or deciding. It sometimes takes more than one try – but if a client doesn’t understand something, it’s up to him to explain until they do.
David’s practice of law has also been greatly informed and enhanced by his experience in counseling courses, gained as he obtained a Masters of Divinity. David obtained his Bachelor of Arts at Furman University in Greenville, SC, majoring in Political Science and French. He earned a Masters of Divinity at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville KY, with emphases in higher education and world religions. Four years later, thinking it would be fun to turn 30, become a father, and go to law school all at once, he entered the Wake Forest University School of Law. While there, he participated in the Legal Clinic for the Elderly and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1999.
Every attorney licensed to practice law in North Carolina is required to obtain Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits every year. David has been an instructor at numerous CLE seminars, including guardianship law in such courses as Basics of Estate Administration, Estate Planning and Probate Law Survey Course, Practice Before the Clerk of Superior Court, and several Medicaid and Special Assistance seminars. He has also addressed small group seminars for the public sponsored by groups such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the North Carolina School of Government at UNC Chapel Hill School of Law. Finally, he is a member of the Greensboro and North Carolina Bar Associations and the NC State Bar, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).
